What is Chronic Illness?

Chronic Illness is a health condition that lasts for a long period of time (typically 3 months or longer), an eternity most would probably say. A life sentence. It often requires a lot of management, treatment, and life style adjustments. Chronic Illness can affect any part of the body. Joints, nerves, organs, tissues, muscles, immune system, and nervous system.

Most of those who are able bodied think chronic illness is just “being tired” or an excuse to be “lazy”. The reality is it’s not something a person can simply push through.

It involves…

  • symptoms
  • flare ups
  • chronic pain
  • fatigue
  • instability
  • unpredictability

Chronic Illness isn’t linear.

Some illnesses stay stable over time while others fluctuate. Some are invisible. One thing that is shared in common across the board is that many are misunderstood.

Examples of Chronic Illness:

  1. Ehlers Danlos Syndrome / Marfan Syndorme
  2. Lupus
  3. Diabetes
  4. Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  5. Chron’s disease and other GI issues
  6. Chronic pain conditions
  7. Neurological disorders
  8. Mental health conditions when long term and impactful (see mental health page for additional information)

If I missed your chronic illness, you aren’t dismissed. Please leave a comment and let me know.
